When it comes to creating and sharing dynamic content that engages audiences, it’s all about capturing the viewer’s attention and stopping them from scrolling away. Usually, content creators focus on the visuals - and rightly so - but there is a lot of power in the use of audio to build anticipation.
Within the first three seconds, a change or drop in the music or audio track can help hook viewers, causing them to keep on watching - especially on audio-first platforms like TikTok.
In this video, Remi, Creative Director at Vidsy, talks through a simple, creative editing trick that effectively builds anticipation using audio.
Three simple steps
⓵ Listen and sync
First, you need to find the drop or change in the audio and line that up with the transition you want to do. This works best in the first 3 seconds of your video as a hook to keep viewers watching
② Add a riser effect
Secondly, choose your sound effect that causes a rise in anticipation, like clashing cymbals or a reverbed whoosh sound
③ Increase the impact
Finally, you want to further increase the impact of the sound by using a linked effect with a visual impact. In this video, Remi used the snap sound effect right when she clicked her finger in line with the transition happening - demonstrating Before vs After.
🔑 Overall, when building anticipation in a video and encouraging viewers to continue watching, don’t just focus on what’s being seen. Consider what’s being heard.
